2005 Drudge Home Report

Modern spiritualism which we are familiar with today came into being when two sisters named Catherine and Margaret Fox and their family moved into a house in Hydesville, New York in December 1847. Almost immediately, they reported hearing rapping noises in the kitchen and pantry. The family spent months ignoring the strange noises until March 1848 when the sounds became deafening with repeated knockings on the pantry door and strange footsteps in the hallway.

To determine the cause of the commotion, the Foxes thoroughly investigated the house, noting that the windows and doors were closed and nothing appeared out of the ordinary, leading them to conclude that their home was haunted by a restless spirit.
