The landscape artists listed below are mostly a part of the Hudson River school of art which was not a formal school nor college. The Hudson River school was a group of artists who fell in love simultaneously with the American landscape. Like many artists, these landscape painters associated spirituality with their artwork, but they also found God in the nature they strove to represent through the extraordinary beauty of the United States countryside.
It’s funny how a postage-stamp sized reproduction of Valley of the Yosemite can have such a large impact. Even in tiny size, the luminous light of this painting reproduction demands more attention. It’s ironical therefore that Bierstadt’s paintings were criticized during his career as being too large, and that somehow the artist was compensating for lack of skill by just showing off. You can view literally hundreds of Albert Bierstadt's paintings here.
Not just a luminous landscape painter, Bingham was also an important documenter of early American pioneer life in the Midwest. Paintings of the frontier of American were considered quite exotic and Bingham’s work was championed by the New York-based American Art Union. The AAU purchased his works and helped to sell engraved reproductions of Bingham's artwork. There is an excellent biography of George Caleb Bingham here, with lots of links to pictures of his paintings.
