There are 5 basic rules:

  1. Buy in volume.
  2. Buy the bargains
  3. Combine trips
  4. Learn cleaning and repairing tricks
  5. Prepare food from scratch (some prepared foods cost healthwise, too)

Buy in Volume - Most of the Time

Buy large and freeze sale items. Invest in a freezer if possible. It will pay for itself quickly especially where reduced price meat is concerned.

Buy in volume when your favourites are on sale, but know your prices by quantity or weight. Occasionally, for whatever reason, products will actually cost less per serving in a smaller container, so be prepared to do a little math. Many stores actually offer that information on the shelf labeling, such as cost per 100 grams so a comparison can be made.

Buy the large bags of rice particularly when they're a bargain. Rice is a versatile food that can even be used to make easily digestable dogfood (mix with a protein, a fat and veggies for optimal nutrition). Rice is a staple with a long shelf life that can make a myriad of different dishes just by adding different flavourings and other ingredients. Make a one-time investment in a rice cooker and let the equipment worry about the timing and temperature. It should use less electricity than a stove burner and is easier than manually cooking 5-minute rice.
