All my life I longed to see the hills of purple heather in Scotland. But it wasn’t until I found out that it only blooms in late summer that I got my journey sorted out. If you want yellow gorse and bluebells, travel in spring. If you want to see the purple heather go in late August or September.
The first time I went to Scotland from my home in Canada it was mid-June. I knew that summer solstice would give me the most daylight for all the driving I wanted to do. I was right about that part. The sun did not set until 11 p.m. in some places! I saw fields of yellow gorse bushes and glades of pretty bluebells. But the purple heather evaded me.
The following year, I got it right. Leaving in mid-September and driving north from Glasgow I headed for the highlands and found my fill of beautiful purple heather. I walked in it, smelled it, took my own picture lying in it, and was thrilled.
