Living in a motor home for extended periods of time is becoming more and more popular for many different reasons, whatever your reasons your needs will be broadly the same and you will need to buy a motor home that fulfills your criteria. The problem in starting out is that you are not sure what your criteria are.

Don't Take Your Chequebook

To establish your needs, first spend some time just looking at motor homes without your cheque book in your pocket. Don’t be talked into making a spur of the moment purchase. I have met a few people who have done just that and have lost several thousand pounds changing the motor home within the first few months.

Find out first of all, what you can get for your money. At first sight there is a huge discrepancy in the market. For the same price as a ten-year-old van of one make, it is possible to buy a brand new van of another make. Quality and specifications vary enormously. Where will you be going? Does the motor home need to be winterised? Overall weight and payload need to be checked out. Some manufacturers build wonderful solid wood cupboards that make the motor home heavier. This is fine for holiday use, but for extended living, you will be carrying much more stuff than you would need for a two-week holiday. The quality of the foam in the upholstery also varies and if you look at older vans of different makes you will see which will wear best.
