Woodie Guthrie, a wandering folk minstrel with deep political convictions, wrote hundreds of songs in his lifetime. This Land is Your Land is undoubtedly one of his best known and loved pieces.

Inspired, at least in part, by the thousands of displaced Dust Bowl farmers and their families he encountered in his travels, he composed the lyrics in 1940. In 1944 he recorded the song for Moses Asch, the founder of Folkways Records, but the song wasn't released to the public until 1951.

Alan Brinkley, Professor of History at Columbia University and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Century Foundation (a non-partisan think-tank), explained in an interview transcript from a PBS program The First Measured Century, that during the depression years there were numerous unemployed people, transients, moving from one area to another looking for work. They would ride the rails, hitchhike, move from here to there as a result of the economic crisis.
