With the race starting in wet conditions but on a rapidly drying track, it was to be Button's decision to be the first to pit for slick tyres that was to ultimately hand him the race victory. The World Champion took the chequered flag ahead of the superb Robert Kubica in 2nd, with Ferrari's Felipe Massa in 3rd. However, the win did seem to be heading to pole sitter Sebastian Vettel, until once again reliability issues struck his Red Bull, suffering brake failure on lap 26, plummeting the car deep into the gravel trap.

Incident Packed Start

As so often the case at the Albert Park circuit, the opening lap of the race provided great drama. Felipe Massa got the jump of team mate Fernando Alonso and entered turn 1 in second place. Behind him, Button, left with no room forced Alonso into a spin which in turn forced him into the hapless Michael Schumacher, dislodging the German's front wing. Alonso rejoined at the back with Schumacher heading for the pits. Further on at Turn 3, the Sauber of Kamui Kobayashi suffered its second front wing failure of the weekend, plunging the rookie into the barriers and then subsequently collecting the Williams of Nico Hulkenburg. The mass of tangled metal meant that the new safety car was given its first run out of the 2010 season.

Button Masters His Tactics

With the track drying quickly, Button made his call to pit on lap 6, and almost immediately ran wide on his slick tyres. However on lap 7, he set the fastest time, prompting all the teams to follow suit. With Button having made his stop earlier, he was propelled into second place behind Vettel. Behind him, Alonso began to make his way through the field, as Lewis Hamilton in the sister McLaren began to realise that he was also in contention for a victory. After Vettel's demise, Hamilton was lying 3rd, right on the tail of Kubica. It was at that point that McLaren made the decision to pit the 2008 Champion, which later turned out to be the wrong move, with none of the other front runners choosing to come in again. This left Hamilton in 5th place, closing rapidly on Alonso in 4th with home favourite Mark Webber in 6th. With the three closely bunched, things came to a head on the penultimate lap. Hamilton got the inside line on Alonso into turn 13, but the Spaniard locked his brakes, leaving Hamilton to take evasive action only for Webber to plough into the back of him. Hamilton managed to get home in 6th, but Webber after pitting for a new front wing, could only manage 9th.
